Adult Immunization Training Program for Pharmacists
Program Overview
Train pharmacists to implement an adult immunization program at their practice site or participate in community immunization efforts. Advise patients where they can obtain the proper immunizations, and increase the public's awareness of the important role both pharmacists and student pharmacists can play in public health.
Presentation
The program can be completed by viewing the PowerPoint® slide show (using Microsoft® PowerPoint® 97 or later), answering the post-test questions and completing the program evaluation on line. Statements of credit will be mailed when the program is succcessfully completed; original certificates are not available for on-line printing.
Program Information
The program combines on-line home study with live, interactive training and hands-on immunization techniques. Participants must complete the on-line home study test no later than September 15, 2008. A passing grade of at least 70% is required to continue with the live component of this program.
Prerequisite
All pharmacists must show proof of current CPR or BLS certification before participating in the live component of the Adult Immunization Training Program. At the completion of this program participants should be able to:
Introduction and Principles of Vaccination
- Describe the risks associated with vaccine preventable diseases in adults
- Provide immunization recommendations to an adult patient based on current immunization schedules
- Identify the most common misconceptions about adult immunizations
Pneumococcal and Influenza Vaccines
- Describe the microbial and immunologic characteristics of pneumococcal disease and influenza
- Describe common adverse events associated with administration of pneumococcal and influenza vaccines
- Identify patients at risk of contracting influenza or pneumococcal disease to establish eligibility
- Interview patient to identify contraindications to immunization
Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, Anthrax, Smallpox Vaccines
- Describe the microbial and immunologic characteristics of Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, Anthrax, and Smallpox
- Describe common adverse events associated with administration of Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Tetanus, Anthrax, and Smallpox
- Describe the pharmacist's potential role in response to regional or national emergencies
Legal Aspects of Providing Immunizations
- Describe the current scope of practice for pharmacist- administered vaccinations
- Explain standing orders as they apply to pharmacists and immunizations
- List documentation necessary for record keeping
- Describe how to report vaccine adverse events to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS)
- Describe how to obtain signed standing orders to administer influenza vaccine
- Describe federal guidance for patient education prior to vaccination
- Describe patient screening for contraindications prior to vaccination administration
Establishing an Immunization Service
- Describe handling and storage procedures for vaccines and where to obtain current information
- List techniques for marketing an immunization program
- Describe procedures for managing adverse events
- Describe steps in receiving compensations for immunization services
- Explain the value of pharmacist-provided immunization services to patients and physicians
Administration Techniques and Hands-on Practice
- Demonstrate proper immunization techniques: intramuscular and intranasal
- Demonstrate proper counseling during a patient encounter
- Utilize "Standard Precautions" to minimize the risk of contamination or infection
Animal Vector Diseases: A Pharmacists' Perspective
- A Differentiate events and exposures that require direct medical attention from those that do not
- Outline patient populations at greatest risk for the discussed disease states
- Given a patient case, determine appropriate counseling points and treatment strategies
Human Papillomavirus Vaccination
- Summarize the epidemiological consequences of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections
- Describe the pathophysiology of HPV
- Identify key points regarding the mechanism of action of bivalent and quadrivalent HPV vaccines
- Recommend the clinical use of the HPV vaccine based on documented evidence
- Counsel patients and family members on the importance of vaccination with the HPV vaccine

Continuing Education Accreditation Information
Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences School of Pharmacy is approved by the Accreditation Council on Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. A total of 20 hours of continuing education credit (2.0 CEUs) upon successful completion of this program. Statements of credit will be mailed within 2 weeks following the program. Statements of Credit may not be printed on-line for this program.
